End the Embargo On Cuba!

The Bush Administration, kowtowing to the right-wing anti-Castro community, has tightened travel restrictions to and from Cuba at a time when all sectors of U.S. society, including the U.S. Chambers of Commerce, are calling for ending the embargo on that island nation. Let us add our voices to the call for normalized relations! This letter goes to George Bush, Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

I object to the use of the government's controls to prevent many groups, both American and Cuban alike, from going to one another's countries as they can to just about any other country in the world. 

Does Cuba constitute a military danger to the USA? The Defense Dept. concluded "no," as long as three years ago now. 

The U.S. Chambers of Commerce is among many organizations of all political stripes proposing easing the restrictions appplied to Cuba. Our country stands apart from the world in its antagonism toward Cuba; meanwhile, the rest of the world trades with the island nation free of competition from the United States. U.S. trade limitations create opportunities for others to end up as Cuba's principle economic partners, shutting us out of a potential emerging marketplace. 

After more than 4 decades of policies seeking to produce the overthrow of Fidel Castro through the mechanism of the trade embargo, the U.S. must revisit the boycott.
